</>What does Whetstone do?
Valheim's repair loop is the least interesting thing about Valheim. Sail out, chop, mine, fight, watch a weapon go amber, sail all the way back to a workbench and click the little hammer six times in a row. Then do it again tomorrow. Whetstone ends it. One press repairs everything you're carrying — not just what's equipped, but the spare axe, the backup bow and the pickaxe you've been nursing since the Black Forest. No workbench, no forge, no going home. Leave Keep My Gear Sharp on and the whole thing simply never comes up again: your kit quietly stays at full condition while you play. Which mostly matters on the long trips. A Deep North expedition becomes limited by your nerve rather than by your armour, a Mistlands mining run lasts as long as the vein does, and a boss fight doesn't fizzle out because your mace gave up with two health bars left to go.
</>What is Whetstone?
Valheim's repair loop means sailing home to click a workbench hammer six times in a row. Whetstone ends it: one press repairs everything in your pack, including the spare axe and the backup bow rather than only what is equipped. Leave Keep My Gear Sharp on and it never happens again. </>Common questions about Whetstone
What does Whetstone do in Valheim?
Whetstone repairs everything you are carrying in Valheim, wherever you happen to be standing, with no workbench, no forge and no sailing home. Press Sharpen Everything and your gear is back at full condition on the spot. Normally a worn weapon means dropping whatever you were doing, crossing half the map to a bench and clicking the little hammer over and over, then repeating the whole trip the next evening. Whetstone removes that round trip entirely, spare gear in your pack included. Free tier on ProjectMods, the community-first PC mod manager and desktop app for 400+ games.
Does Whetstone repair carried spares or only equipped gear?
Everything in your pack, not just what is equipped, and that difference is worth knowing. The gear that quietly rots in Valheim is rarely the sword in your hand. It is the spare axe, the backup bow, the pickaxe you have been nursing since the Black Forest and the second shield you keep for troll nights. One press of Sharpen Everything covers the lot, carried spares included. So you can load a longship with backups for a long voyage and know every piece is at full condition when you land, instead of discovering the spare is in worse shape than the original.
What does Keep My Gear Sharp do in Whetstone?
Keep My Gear Sharp is the hands-off version. Leave it on and everything in your Valheim pack quietly stays at full condition while you play, so the amber durability warning never appears and repairs stop being something you think about. Sharpen Everything is the manual alternative, one press right now wherever you are standing, for players who would rather keep the repair rhythm and only skip the sail home. Either one on its own is enough, so there is no need to run both. Switch Keep My Gear Sharp off at any time and Valheim's normal wear returns immediately, so it is easy to try for a single expedition.
Do I still need a workbench or forge in Valheim with Whetstone?
For repairs, no, and that is the whole point. Whetstone handles repairs anywhere, so a workbench stops being a repair stop. You still need workbenches, forges and the rest for everything else they do in Valheim: crafting, upgrading gear to the next quality level, and holding back spawns near your base. Whetstone does not touch any of that and it will not build or upgrade anything for you. What it removes is the specific chore of hiking back to a bench with an amber weapon, clicking the hammer repeatedly, and hiking out again. The rest of the crafting loop is untouched.
When is Whetstone most useful in Valheim?
On long expeditions, which is exactly where Valheim's repair loop bites hardest. A run into the Deep North or a deep Mistlands push is limited less by danger than by how much durability you packed, and the old answer was always to turn back early. With Whetstone, one press at the far end of the map puts everything you carry back at full condition, so the trip is limited by your nerve rather than your armour. It is also good for long building sessions, where the hammer and axe wear down fast while you clear forest, and for boss attempts you want to start clean.

System Requirements
What features does Whetstone include?
- Repairs everything in your pack in one press, wherever you're standing — no workbench, no forge, no trip home.
- Covers carried spares too: the backup bow, the second axe, the pickaxe you've nursed since the Black Forest.
- Leave Keep My Gear Sharp on and your kit quietly stays at full condition for the whole session.
- Works right out in the field — mid-raid, mid-mine, halfway up a mountain with no shelter anywhere.
- Toggle it off any time you fancy the vanilla repair rhythm back.
Best For
- Deep North expeditions where the nearest workbench is a long, cold boat ride back the way you came
- Boss fights where a mace or atgeir goes amber with two health bars still on the board
- Mountains and Mistlands mining runs where the pickaxe gives out well before the vein does
- Builders who keep breaking off a build to sort out hammer condition instead of actually placing anything
- Co-op nights where nobody wants to be the one who breaks the run to sail home and repair
